Norwegian test sign language
Register for the test
Before you register for the test, you should read about the test, how it is structured, and what level you should choose.
The next test you can register for, is held in December 2024.
You can register for this test from Monday the 28th of October at 9 am. The registration will close on Friday the 1st of November at 11:59 pm.
You choose yourself how many of the four parts of the test you want to register for (sign language comprehension, reading, writing, and sign language communication). You cannot register for the same part more than once during the same test period.
Contact your test centre if you are taking a test in Norwegian sign language.
For the writing test and the sign language tests you must choose a level when you register.
Make sure to complete the registration
It is important that you complete all the steps of the registration process. You must choose how you wish to pay for the test. Your registration is complete when you receive confirmation by text or email.
You must write your correct postal address when you register for the test. If you have moved to a new address, you must notify the test centre.
Who can take the test?
The tests for sign language users are aimed at adult immigrants who are learning both Norwegian sign language and written Norwegian.
Test tasks are intended for adults. They may be challenging for candidates under the age of 18.
Some test centres require that test takers be registered in the Norwegian Population Register as living in the municipality (kommune).
Do you live outside of Norway?
If you are not registered as an inhabitant of a municipality, or you live in a different country, you can take the test at one of the following test centres:
- Trondheim Voksenopplæring (Trøndelag fylke)
- Voksenopplæringen i Øvre Eiker (Buskerud fylke)
- Larvik læringssenter (Vestfold fylke)
If you wish to take the test in a municipality other than the one you live in, or one of the test centres above, you should check with the test centre whether you can take the test there.
You need to do this before you register for the test, or you may lose your place.
You cannot take the test abroad.
What does the test cost?
Your municipality (kommune) decides what the test costs. The price may vary between NOK 300 for one test part and NOK 2,200.
You will find correct prices in the registration portal. You can also contact the test centre and ask them about the price for the test in your municipality.
Test centres are responsible for payments. Common means of payment are by bank card (when you complete the form in the registration portal), online banking, by invoice or by other arrangement with the test centre.
Entitled to a free test?
If you have both the right and an obligation (rett og plikt) to participate in Norwegian language training, you can take all parts of the test for free once. The test centre will register you for the free test.
If you are not entitled to free Norwegian language training, or if you are re-taking the test, you will have to pay for the test and you must register for the test yourself.
Which level should I choose?
The test for sign language users (Norwegian and Norwegian sign language) has four separate parts:
- Test of Norwegian sign language comprehension
- Test of communication of Norwegian sign language
- Reading test
- Writing test
You need to choose a level when you register for the Test of Communication of Norwegian Sign Language, the Test of Norwegian Sign Language Comprehension, and the writing test. For each of these three parts, you choose if you want to take the test at level:
- A1–A2
- A2–B1
- B1–B2 (not an option for the Test of Norwegian Sign Language Comprehension)
When you take the Test of Communication of Norwegian Sign Language, you may get a higher result than the level you registered for. This is not possible for the Test of Norwegian Sign Language Comprehension or for the writing test. This is why it is important to register for the right level.
Help to choose the right level
If you are attending a Norwegian course, you can ask your teacher for advice in choosing the right level. You may also use this self-assessment form:
When will I receive the invitation?
You will receive an information letter or e-mail in Norwegian from the test centre no later than two weeks before the date of the test.
The letter has information about the date, time, and location of your test. The different parts may be held on the same day, or on different days.
If you have questions about the date for your test, you must contact the test centre.
Do you want to cancel your registration?
Your registration for the test is binding. That means that you must pay for the test, even if you are unable to take it. If you have a medical certificate, you can take the test later without having to pay for it.
You must contact the test centre to cancel your registration.
Special adaptations
The test can be adapted or accommodated in various ways. Accommodations could include, for example, extra time or being allowed to sit in a separate room when taking the test.
You must contact your test centre as soon as possible, and no later than three days after registering for the test.
