Norwegian language test A1-B2
Register for the test
Before you register for the test, you should read about the test, about how the test is set up and what level you should choose.
When is the test?
In most municipalities the Norwegian language test (A1–B2) is held four times each year.
You choose which parts of the test you wish to register for (there are four parts individual parts). You are not permitted to take the same part of the test more than once in the same test period.
For two of the individual parts you have to choose which level you wish to take the test in.
Next test
The next Norwegian language test will be held 2nd–6th of December 2024.
Next registration period
The next test you can register for is held in December 2024. You can register for this test from Monday 28th of October from 09:00h. The registration will close Friday 1st of November at 23:59h.

- Registration period: 28 October – 1 November
- Test period: 2 December – 6 December
Not all test centres offer tests in all the periods indicated below. You need to go to your municipality's (kommune) website to find out when you can take the test.
Some municipalities arrange the test parts on the same day, others on different dates. See the informasjon [...]
Make sure to complete the registration
It is important that you complete the registration. You choose how to pay for the test. You are registered when you receive confirmation by text message and email.
Check that your correct address has been registered. If you have moved to a new address, you must notify the test centre.
Who can take the test?
The Norwegian language test is aimed at candidates between 18 and 67 years old. The test contains questions that are meant for adults and may be challenging to answer for candidates under 18 years old.
A number of test centres only offer the test to people who are registered in the Norwegian Population Register as living in the municipality (kommune).
Do you live outside of Norway?
If you are not registered as an inhabitant of a municipality or you live in a different country, you can take the test in one of the following test centres:
- Trondheim Voksenopplæring (Trøndelag county)
- Voksenopplæringen i Øvre Eiker (Buskerud county)
- Lørenskog voksenopplæring (Akershus county)
- Larvik læringssenter (Vestfold county)
If you wish to take the test in a municipality other than the one you live in, or one of the test centres above, you have to check with the test centre whether you can register to take the test there. You have to do this before you register to take the test, or you may lose your place.
The test will not be held abroad.
What does the test cost?
Your municipality (kommune) decides what the test costs. The price varies between NOK 400 (or more) for one test part and NOK 2,200 (or less) for the entire Norwegian language test.
You will find the correct prices in the registration portal. You can also contact the test centre to find out what they charge for the tests.
You can contact the test centre and ask them about the price for the test in your municipality.
The test centres are responsible for payment. Common means of payment are by bank card or Vipps (when you complete the form in the registration portal), in your online bank, by invoice or by another arrangement with the test centre.
Entitled to a free test?
If you are entitled to participate in Norwegian language training and it is mandatory for you, you can take all parts of the test free one time. The test centre will register you for the free test.
If you are not entitled to free Norwegian language training, you must pay for the test. You must also register for the test yourself. You can do this here when registration opens.
If you wish to retake the test, you will have to register and pay for the test yourself.
If you are unsure whether you are entitled to free Norwegian language training, you can read about the right and obligation to take language training on IMDi's website (in Norwegian only).
What level should I choose?
The Norwegian language test has four individual parts:
- Reading test
- Listening test
- Written test
- Oral test
When you register for the written presentation part of the test and for the oral part of the test you have to choose what level you want to take the test in. For each of these parts you can choose between:
- A1–A2
- A2–B1
- B1–B2
On the oral part you can achieve a higher result than what you registered for. In the written presentation you cannot get a higher result than what you registered for. Therefore it is important that you register for the right level.
The reading and listening tests are often taken at the same time as the written test. If you register for these three test parts at the same time, you only choose a level for the written test. The reading and listening tests automatically adapt to your level during the test.
How to choose the right level
If you attend a Norwegian langualge class, you can ask your teacher for advice in choosing the right level for your test.
When will I receive notice of the test?
You will receive a letter/email from the test centre two weeks before the date of the test. You may also receive it earlier.
The letter will inform you about the date, time and location of the test. The written and oral tests are normally taken on different dates.
If you have any questions about the date of your test, contact your test centre.
Do you want to cancel you registration?
Registration for the tests is binding. This means that when you register for the test, you have to pay for it even if you are unable to take it.
If you have a medical certificate, you can take the test at a later date without having to pay for it.
If you wish to cancel your registration, you need to contact your test centre.
Special adaptations
The test can be adapted or accommodated in various ways. Accommodations could include, for example, extra time or being allowed to sit in a separate room when taking the test.
You must contact your test centre as soon as possible, and no later than three days after registering for the test.
